Age-related hearing loss increases the risk of dementia in the future but we do not understand why this happens.

For example, there is some evidence that if someone has hearing loss, they are more likely to develop dementia in the future than someone without hearing loss.

However, not everyone with hearing loss will develop dementia. Hearing in a quiet environment is also different to hearing in a noisy one.

Researchers believe that how someone listens to sounds in noisy environments may better explain the link between hearing loss and dementia.

They have designed new hearing tests and would like to study how they relate to conventional hearing tests and tests of memory and thinking.

This will allow them to understand what different hearing abilities look like in people with or without dementia.

These new tests could potentially be used in the future to predict who will go on to develop dementia based on their hearing abilities

Volunteer Criteria

  • Aged 40+
  • Able to interact with a computer OR access one at home with headphones
  • No severe mental health or neurological condition that impacts memory and thinking abilities

What will I be asked to do?

A participant will be asked to take part in the study either in-person (if can travel to Newcastle University) OR online

  • There will be ONE visit to the Auditory Laboratory at the Newcastle University Medical School for ONE hour.
  • There is an optional second visit to have an MRI scan of the head for 30 mins at the Centre for Ageing and Vitality, Newcastle University

  • There will be ONE session on Zoom of hearing and listening tests for around ONE hour.

During the sessions, participants will first sign a consent form and then perform simple hearing and headphones checks.

Then you will perform 4 listening tests lasting a few minutes each.

Next you will perform a questionnaire about their music-related behaviours.

Finally, you will perform a small test or memory and thinking.

At the end, you will have a debrief about the participation.

When and where?

1. Part 1 will take place at the Newcastle University Medical School OR online if participants live outside Newcastle

2. Part 2 (optional) will take place at the Centre for Ageing and Vitality at Newcastle University

Will I get anything for taking part?

1. £10 voucher for each session

2. Reasonable contribution towards travel expenses
