Aim

There has been increasing discussion regarding delivering an environmentally friendly health service in the UK. As part of this, the NHS has now committed to delivering a ‘net zero’ promise regarding emissions by 2045. To achieve this aim, there is now a focus on examining how certain medical procedures can be changed to reduce their environmental impact.

Surgery is one of the areas where there has been most focus. This is because surgery often involves lots of differing specialist equipment, anaesthetic gases and the need for thorough cleaning or sterilisation processes. However, changing surgical processes may impact upon patients and the public.

We have therefore developed a questionnaire to understand the perspectives of the public regarding green surgical projects, the impact upon patients and what the public feel is important to them.

Volunteer Criteria

We are looking for anyone over the age of 18. You do not need to have had an operation in the past to take part.

We are keen to understand a broad ranges of opinions, and so we are keen to hear from anyone from any background, as long as you are based in England.

What will I be asked to do?

We are asking all those interested to start by completing a short anonymous questionnaire found here: https://imperial.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1HzNnFFO40oiesS

If you are interested in taking part in future parts of the wider project we are conducting (such as focus groups and interviews) to explore things in more depth please feel free to contact our study team via the VOICE platform.

When and where?

The anonymous questionnaire is online and will close on the 5th July 2022.

Will I get anything for taking part?

No payment will be provided for taking part in this short survey. However, this project will enable respondents to understand the changes that may be coming to healthcare and feedback their opinions. It will give individuals the chance to share their experiences and help make surgery more sustainable, but still centred upon patients’ needs.
