Assessing the Barriers to Breast Screening (ABBS) Study
Breast cancer is now the most common type of cancer in the world. To treat breast cancer effectively it is important to find it early. Breast cancer screening (or mammograms) are one of the main ways we can find breast cancer at a treatable stage. In England women aged between 47 and 73 are invited to attend these appointments.
However, the uptake of invitations to breast screening appointments is falling, and has been for some time. This is especially the case amongst certain groups of people, for example those with multiple medical problems or those from different ethnicities.
We are trying to understand the challenges women face to attend breast cancer screening. We are also trying to understand why some women choose not to go. The ultimate aim of this is to try and overcome some of these issues.
To do this we are looking to conduct interviews with women who have been invited to screen beforehand to understand their experience. Those who wish to will also be asked if they wanted to get involved in some workshops/group sessions to explore these issues further.
We are looking for anyone over the age of 47, who have been invited previously to breast screening programme . You do not need to have attended to take part.
What will I be asked to do?
Taking part in this study will involve giving your opinions on breast screening , including your own experience and any suggestions on what could change to make breast screening a better experience.
The study will involve a short pre-interview questionnaire (taking approximately 5-10 mins). You will then be invited to take part in an interview lasting 45mins. A few participants will be recalled if they consent to take part in focus groups to delve deeper into the issues raised in the questionnaire.
Further information about the study is provided in the information sheet linked at the bottom of the page.
When and where?
The questionnaire is available at the above link hosted on Imperial Qualtrics [online survey platform]. Interviews will be conducted using Zoom/Microsoft Team and arranged directly between people who volunteer and the research team.
Will I get anything for taking part?
This study gives the unique opportunity to change the way we understand how women see breast screening. It will also give a chance to share your experiences and learn more about this important topic.
How do I take part?
Please register your interest through VOICE by clicking on the button at the top right hand of the page.
You will be directed a short pre-interview questionnaire to be completed. Following completion of the questionnaire you will be contacted by the Dr Amish Acharya (lead researcher) to organise a time for a zoom or Teams interview.
