Aim

Established 8 years ago, the VOICE Research Support Group supports Newcastle University researchers by providing feedback and advice during the early stages of developing a project. This includes feedback on research ideas and proposals, lay summaries of research, public and patient information sheets, questionnaires and much more.

Each year membership of the group is renewed.

  • Do you have an interest in research?
  • Would you like to help researchers and give feedback on their projects?
  • Would you like to join a friendly group and meet other VOICE members?

We are looking for volunteers who enjoy discussing and learning about research and want to help influence the direction of research projects on a wide variety of topics.

Volunteer Criteria

To be a member of the VOICE Research Support Group you must:

  • be aged 18 or over
  • be willing to support researchers and provide them with feedback
  • be able to listen and respect other members' viewpoints in a group setting
  • be willing to commit to attending regular meetings for 1 year

No particular skills or experience is required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved.

We welcome new and returning members.

What will I be asked to do?

As a member of the VOICE Research Support Group, you will be asked to attend monthly meetings for 1 year (September 2022-July 2023) and meet with different researchers. At each meeting, the researcher will give a short presentation about their work or project and will either have some questions or topics they would like to discuss with the group or a document they would like feedback on. You will be asked to give your feedback, advice and ideas within a group setting.

Details of each meeting will be circulated in advance for you to read ahead of the meeting.

Occasionally you may also be asked to provide feedback on lay summaries via email in between meetings.

In the first meeting, you will be provided with an induction and support pack to help you with your role.

When and where?

Meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of every month, (September 2022 – July 2023), 10:30-11:30.

We are looking to create multiple groups, with some meeting in person and others online via Zoom. For in-person events we will meet in person at The Catalyst, Newcastle Helix, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The first meeting will take place on Wednesday 7th September.

When applying for this opportunity, please indicate if you would prefer to meet online or in person. This choice will dictate which group you are placed in if selected.

In some circumstances in-person events may have to be changed to virtual meetings, however, we aim to keep this to a minimum where possible.

Will I get anything for taking part?

Travel expenses within the North-East will be reimbursed and refreshments will be provided for face-to-face meetings.

I am recovering from a stroke and also need a new knee. How accessible is the venue and will expenses pay for a taxi?

Hi Liz,
The catalyst is accessible by bus and metro to st James park, however, expenses will also be re-imbursed as long as a reciept is provided. Alternatively, there is the option to join the online group which will meet at the same time as the in person group and will allow you to contribute from the comfort of your own home.

All the best,
Katrina

I would love to re-join this group after a few year's absence becasue the time changed so that I have a permanent diary clash on the first Wednesday morning of each month. As there is more than one group could there be different times? (For me preferably not Tuesdays!)

Hi Pamela,
Unfortunately we will be keeping all groups on the first Wednesday of each month again this year, with the option of moving one group online instead of being in person.
All the best,
Katrina
