Aim

The Orthopaedic Research Institute at Bournemouth University is working with Buckingham Healthcare, a designer and manufacturer of aids to daily living and healthcare related products, to design a transfer board for wheelchair users.

Transfer boards are used to form a temporary bridge between two surfaces, enabling people with restricted movement in their legs to slide safely from one position to another, e.g. from a wheelchair to a toilet.

This project aims to investigate the needs and preferences of wheelchair users, carers and clinicians to inform the design of a transfer board that is safe and practical to use.

Volunteer Criteria

We would like to invite wheelchair users, carers of wheelchair users, and clinicians who work with wheelchair users to participate in this survey.

What will I be asked to do?

We are interested in understanding the needs and preferences of wheelchair users, carers of wheelchair users, and clinicians who work with wheelchair users. To do this, we are inviting you to complete a short online questionnaire that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. You will be asked to provide your details, including your age, gender, height and weight. We will ask you about your experience transferring from a wheelchair at home and in the community. We will ask you what you find easy, and what you find difficult, and ask for your ideas on how we can improve the wheelchair transfer process.

Following completion of the survey, you will have the option to provide your contact details for future contact. If you are happy to be contacted again in the future, a member of the research team may invite you to take part in a follow up interview, to explore in-depth factors associated with transferring from a wheelchair. The interview may last approximately 30-60 minutes.

When and where?

The survey can be completed online any time. If you are contacted about participating in a follow up interview, this will take place online, or over the telephone, at a time and date convenient to you.

Will I get anything for taking part?

Participation in this survey is voluntarily, and you will not be reimbursed for taking part. You will not incur any costs for taking part.
