Aim

Muscle strength is an essential ‘building block’ for healthy ageing, it declines as we age but it can be maintained through exercise. Approximately half of all women aged 45 years and over, do no regular strength exercises. Strong in Midlife is a research project supported by a Catalyst award from UKRI and Zinc. The aim is to find ways to make it easier for women in midlife to do regular muscle strength training so that they arrive at the ‘start line’ of later life with better musculoskeletal health and greater physical reserves. We are working closely with women in midlife to understand their experiences and co-create a solution.

Volunteer Criteria

We are seeking the views of women in midlife, aged 45 and over.

We are interested in hearing from people who do not currently engage in regular physical activity as well as people who do.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to take part in 2 online workshops.

Once the research project and work done to date has been explained, you will be asked to join a discussion around the research findings on women's experience of midlife, perceptions of strength training and ideas that might support women to engage in strength training. You will be asked to share your views and experiences and help advise on next steps for the project.

When and where?

Both workshops will take place via Zoom.

Workshop 1 will take place on Monday 31st January, 1:00-2:30pm

Workshop 2 will take place on Monday 21st February, 2:00-3:30pm.

Will I get anything for taking part?

You will receive £20 UK shopping voucher per workshop.

Healthy Ageing Challenge

This project is funded by the UKRI Healthy Ageing Challenge Catalyst Awards

One in 12 people in the UK are over 75. By 2040, this will rise to one in seven. A third of children born now are expected to live to 100. On average, people aged 65 will live just half of the rest of their life without disability.

We want:

  • everyone to remain active, productive, independent and socially connected across generations for as long as possible
  • to narrow the gap between the experiences of the richest and poorest.

The challenge will help businesses, including social enterprises, to create products and services to help people as they age, and deliver them at scale.

The Catalyst Awards aim to inspire innovations with potential to improve the health and wellbeing of older people across the world. The awards are the UK contribution to the Healthy Longevity Grand Challenge, a global collaboration led by the US National Academy of Medicine (NAM).
