The NHS Lung Health Check is a new service that is offered in some parts of England. It aims to help diagnose lung cancer at an earlier stage when treatment may be more successful. You can find out more about the new NHS Lung Health Checks (including a map of where the Lung Health Checks are currently available) on the Cancer Research UK website

For our project, we are particularly interested in participation at Lung Health Checks in West London which are currently available for patients at participating GPs across Hillingdon, Hammersmith & Fulham and Sutton.

The uptake of Lung Health Checks is currently low. We therefore aim to undertake a series of workshops to further understand why eligible people are choosing to not have their lung health checks and to explore  and co-develop new ways in which we can encourage participation.

Volunteer Criteria

We would like to invite members of the public who:

  • Live or receive care in London
  • are aged 53-77 years old
  • are current or previous smokers
  • are interested in sharing their views and experiences of lung health checks.

We are hoping to include a mixture of individuals who have and have not attended their lung health check, so please note that you do not need to have attended to take part.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to attend two workshops in January 2022, which will take place over Zoom and will last approximately 90 minutes each.

In the first workshop, you will be asked to share your own views and experiences on the perceived barriers to lung health checks, as well as suggesting and exploring new ways in which these barriers might be overcome.

In the second workshop,  we will focus and further develop 1 or 2 of the proposed ideas to improve attendance, with the aim to implement the co-developed idea in our West London services.

When and where?

Workshops will take place online using Zoom.  You will also be able to join by telephone if you prefer.

The workshops will take place on:

19th January at 13.30-15.00 OR 18.00-19.30

27th January at 14.15-15.45 OR 18.00-19.30

You will be asked to provide your availability and preference when you sign up to the opportunity.

Will I get anything for taking part?

Members of the public will be offered up to a total of £42.50 for participating in line with NIHR policy of £25 per hour + £5 remote working fee for each workshop in line with NIHR payment rates for public contributors.

You will also get the rare opportunity to be involved in developing local Lung Health Check services, learn more about this topic and use your experiences to help create a more accessible service.

How to get involved?

Please register your interest by clicking the 'I would like to take part' button at the top of the page.

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and you will be contacted regarding the outcome of your expression of interest.
