Devices that we work on tend to include the following:
- devices that are used by surgeons in the operating theatre to either assess or diagnose. These are typically imaging devices to help them tell the bad tissue from the good for cancer surgery.
- devices that are used to assess and monitor fitness for surgery and post surgical recovery. These are typically remote sensing devices in the form of a patch that is stuck on the body and collects vital signs.
- implants - so devices are that are inserted and left in the body as part of treatment or replacement.
- software used as medical devices - this includes artificial intelligence that can detect the presence of certain conditions, but it has to be "housed" in device. We then have to assess both the artificial intelligence and the device.
In terms of tracking health/fitness, it has to relate to the surgical process, so preparing for or recovering from surgery. We would not look at gneral health tracking like a smart watch would.

Aim
We would like to increase the awareness and understanding of what patients, carers and members of the public can contribute to the development of medical devices, and to how they are tested to make sure they are safe and they work.
We would also like to make sure that medical device developers make technology that is inclusive, and will deliver the same positive outcomes for all patients; as well as technology that is sustainable. We can only achieve this by having a large group of patient and public contributors to support us.
Volunteer Criteria
Just an interest in learning more about how patients and the public contribute to clinical/medical research, and you can ask questions.
What will I be asked to do?
Listen and if you have any observations, questions or suggestions then you can contribute to the discussion.
When and where?
These will be delivered online on a monthly basis. The link to join will be sent24 hours before the start of the event.
Will I get anything for taking part?

My apologies for that - The National Institute for Health and Care Research is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care in England, so we get our money from them. The Co-operative itself, which is the owner of this post is managed by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds. So these two organisations receive our funding from Department of Health and Social Care and they make sure we operate under the appropriate legal frameworks.
So, yes, we are a public sector research organisation.

Give examples of 'devices', please. Does this for instance, artificial joints or less 'fixed' devices. Or electronic devices tracking health/fitness?
