Why are more women working into their 70s?

Following the recent BBC article stating that the proportion of women working into their 70s in the UK has doubled in the last four years, we would like to ask our members:

Do you think this is due to financial necessity or a motivation to stay active?

    I read that article Ian and found it very useful. The idea of any age group being stereotyped is very problematic. The "nature" or "nurture" viewpoints seem to be forgotten when it comes to discussing anyone over 65 years old. People are individuals with experiences and backgrounds which are different. My grandmother worked up to the age of 73 years old as a gardener to the 1950's. To many such individuals it was financial need that they undertook hard physical work.

    I think it is a good idea to have a workshop regarding the topic of "working to the age of 70 and over".

    Possibly a bit of both? Some older people are saying that they are supporting their adult children who may be in need of financial assistance but may be out of work, have health problems, etc.

    If I was clever - whch I am not - I would like to start a "discussion" on this topic and ask questions such as: "Why is this only focusing on women - why not men as well?"

    Shouldn't the question be "gender neutral"?

    Isn't it of interest as to why more and more elderly people per se are working long after the recognised retirement age?

    Perhaps Voice North should organise a "tea & biscuit" session to discuss this?

    To me it reads like a poll.

    This article was generated by the BBC using a combination of facts and speculation with one-sided interviewees.( By Simon Gompertz Personal finance correspondent, BBC. )

    The BBC and the Guardian support the idea that it is for financial reasons.

    The Telegraph and the Daily Mail support the idea that it is a "stay active" reason.

    Other media outlets suggest that it is a mixture of both.

    The vote option you give doesn't give you the option of saying "a mixture of both."

    Seems a bit "political" to me :(
