Aim

Often people who provide care to friends or family members find being a caregiver is challenging. This study will evaluate the acceptability and effectiveness of a positive statements card which will be compared with an alternative card.

Volunteer Criteria

Any adults (over 18) who identify themselves as an informal caregiver. This means someone who provides care to a friend or family member to help them manage everyday tasks or activities which they would have difficulty managing without this help. Caregivers do not have to live with the person they provide care for. People who are employed as caregivers for their job are not eligible to take part in this study.

What will I be asked to do?

First you will be asked to answer some online questions about your caring situation (for example how long it has lasted and how many hours of care you provide). There will then be several questions about how you feel about being a caregiver and how it impacts on you. This well take approximately 20 minutes to complete. There will be the opportunity to miss out any question you don't want to answer.

The questionnaire will also ask you to provide your address so you can take part in the second part of the study.

For the second part of the study, you will be randomly allocated to one of two groups. Both groups will receive a short card to read twice a day for 3 weeks. One group will receive a card which contains information designed to help people look at their situation in a positive way. The second group will receive an alternative containing information about a mindfulness breathing activity. Both cards take 5-10 minutes to read through and think about.

At the end of the 3 weeks you will be asked to complete one of the questionnaires again and to answer some questions about your experiences of using whichever card you have been sent. You will then be debriefed with some additional information.

When and where?

The questions are to be completed online and the cards will be sent to your home address in the post.

You can register to take part up until May 2019.

To take part in the first part of the study, click on the I would like to take part button.

Will I get anything for taking part?

Participants will be entered into a draw for one of 3 £20 Amazon vouchers as a thank-you for taking part in this study.

People may find the statements on the card helpful and they will have the benefit of contributing to a study which may help other caregivers in the future.
