Aim

The UK population is changing. One in three children born in the UK today can expect to live to 100. From now until 2037 the number of people aged 65 and over will rise by 278,000 on average each year. While there are challenges associated with population ageing, living longer presents a massive opportunity for new ideas and innovations that can shape a future that better reflect these demographic trends

In May 2018, the PM announced the first mission of the Ageing Society Grand Challenge – to ensure people can enjoy at least five extra healthy, independent years of life by 2035, while narrowing the gap between the experience of the richest and the poorest. We have a shared ambition for Government, business, academia and civil society to work together so that people of all ages can lead fuller, healthier and more active lives; and a new generation of businesses thrive in the growing global market for products and services that support older people.

To this end, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Department for Health and Social Care, Design Council, the IET, the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design and Versus Arthritis are working together on a two-day design workshop to explore the opportunities to design better solutions for people who can find everyday tasks a challenge as a result of low dexterity.

Volunteer Criteria

Anyone who has experience of low dexterity is able to take part. This opportunity is open to anyone anywhere in the UK.

What will I be asked to do?

Led by a Design Council Design Associate, the workshop will explore how we design for people with low dexterity. Using a structured design approach based on Design Council’s Framework for Innovation, working in small teams you will collaboratively reframe the challenges of living with low dexterity, to surface new insights and identify opportunities for innovation.

When and where?

The workshop will run for two days, 23rd & 24th January 2019, 10-4pm. The workshop will take place at Savoy Place, London.

If you can only attend the first day, let us know when registering and we can make the necessary arrangements.

Will I get anything for taking part?

Travel and accommodation will be provided for those living outside of London.

For those located in the London area, travel expenses will also be reimbursed.

You will also recieve a £50 gift voucher for each day you attend.
