VOICE Research Support Group 2018-19

An opportunity to become a member of the VOICE Research Support Group

  • Wednesday 5th September 2018 10:00 (3 hours, 45 mins)
  • Workshop
  • Influence

Over the last 4 years the VOICE Research Support Group has provided researchers across Newcastle University with support for their public involvement. VOICE members have assisted researchers by providing feedback on research proposals and lay summaries and this has contributed to project success for many researchers.

  • Do you have an interest in medical research?
  • Would you like to help researchers and give feedback on their projects?
  • Would you like to join a friendly group and meet other VOICE members?

We are looking for volunteers who enjoy talking and learning about medical research by attending a series of meetings and events in Newcastle.

Volunteer Criteria

  • You need to be willing to commit to 8 meetings a year
  • No particular skills are required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved
  • You need to be able to listen to other members' viewpoints in a group setting
  • You need to be willing to support researchers and provide feedback on their research project
  • You can apply again if you have already been a member of the group

What will I be asked to do?

During the morning you will be split in to a group of 10 and a researcher will come and speak to you about their research. You will be asked to give your advice and feedback within a group setting. You might be asked to review their plain English summary, which is a brief summary that has been written for members of the public, rather than researchers. A plain English summary should be written clearly and simply, without jargon and with an explanation of any technical terms that have to be included.

During the afternoon we will bring all of the Research Support Group members back together. The afternoon session might be an event, lecture of debate. Or it could be a feedback session where researchers come back to the group and update you on their project.

We always aim to send out details of which researchers will be speaking at each meeting in advance and also provide feedback after the meetings and let group members know how their input has been used.

The Research Support Group has terms of reference and they are available to view here.

Here's what some of our former members have said about the group:

“Having something to look forward to, and contributing to the future of patient care and clinical research are the important feel good factors I needed in retirement. During my career as a civil servant I always enjoyed the commitment of challenging voluntary work because it was given from personal experience of shared needs.

VOICE Research Support Group has given me that same feel good factor with their options of voluntary commitment I could not find elsewhere because of ill health and age. Making something positive out of personal setbacks, while contributing to patient care and clinical research, is a worthwhile contribution to the future”
VOICE Research Support Group member

“It has made us proud of our city and of the opportunities VOICE offers people at our stage of life. We have also enjoyed the company of colleagues and of hearing other voices with different life experiences and career backgrounds”
