The Medical Research Council (MRC) is a public body set up in 1913 to fund medical research that will improve human health and benefit society. The MRC receive a grant from the UK Government and they make this funding available to the world-class scientists in universities and their own institutes. Scientists apply to them with a proposal for a research project; they then review the application and decide which proposals they can fund.

Since April this year, the MRC has been part of a new organisation called UK Research and Innovation which brings together nine previously separate organisations that support different areas of research.

Every five years, the MRC develops and publishes a strategic plan setting out its aims and objectives, highlighting priority areas for research, and making commitments as to how it will meet the objectives.

The current plan, Research Changes Lives ends in 2019. A new plan is being developed through a process of engagement and discussion with a wide range of stakeholders including: researchers, government departments, universities, industry representatives, patient interest groups and charities and international partners. The new Strategic Delivery Plan will also complement and support the UK Research and Innovation strategy.

As part of the process to develop the Strategic Delivery Plan, the MRC is seeking views on the draft Plan from members of the public. This will help them to understand public views of the Plan and, once published, will help ensure their communications about the Plan are clear and easily understood.
