The symposium will include presentations, panel discussions, museum tours and creative activities.
What would a long term strategy look like for museums collaborating with people working in health, care and wellbeing in relation to social connectivity, sense of belonging and identities in an ageing population?
Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) are hosting a regional symposium bringing together museum and gallery staff, creative people, health and wellbeing workers, older people organisations, academics and researchers and national funders.
The symposium will celebrate the Live Well project delivered by National Museums of Northern Ireland (NMNI) and TWAM, and use our learning as a springboard to share best practice across the sector when engaging older people.
Live Well is a three year project (2016-19) aimed at engaging disadvantaged older people (50+) with museums who currently have limited or no access to cultural services, via voluntary and statutory support organisations and services, to improve social engagement, cultural participation and overall personal progression.
Museums, wellbeing and an ageing population
The symposium will explore how connections can be made between museums and gallery programmes, social care and national health and wellbeing strategies and policies.
Using some of the key recommendations from the All-Party Parliamentary inquiry, ‘Creative Health: The Art for Health and Wellbeing’ as a starting point we will explore the potential of museum and galleries in collaborating with the health sector to create a long term, sustainable strategy for creativity, health and wellbeing.
As well as discussions and key note speakers, delegates will have the opportunity to engage with behind the scene collection tours and creative workshops. There will also be a market place of information stalls highlighting opportunities within TWAM and community organisations supporting older people.
