FIT kit perception and acceptability study
Overview

This is an opportunity to help to improve a bowel cancer detection test by making it easier and more acceptable for future patients to use. The purpose of the study is to better understand your views of a new stool (poo) sample test called the FIT kit.

  • Thursday 14th February 2019 10:00 (3 hours, 30 mins)
  • Research Participant
  • Participate

Aim

The purpose of the study is to better understand your views towards a non-invasive stool test which can be used to detect colorectal (bowel) cancer.

If you want to take part, we will invite you to a workshop where we simulate scenarios related to the stool test with healthcare professionals/ faculty. You will not be asked to provide a stool sample.

Taking part will help us improve a non-invasive bowel cancer detection test by making it easier and more acceptable for future patients to use. The study is sponsored by Imperial College London.

Volunteer Criteria

The study is for men and women over the age of 40 and below the age of 80. We aim to recruit between 10 and 20 volunteers for each workshop.

What will I be asked to do?

In the session, which will take place in in White City, in London, we will use group discussion, simulations and questionnaires. The sessions may use audio/ video recording but you will be anonymised in any of this recording which is stored. The session will take place on Thursday February 14th in the morning only (half day) and you will need to only attend this session.

When and where?

The session will take place at ‘The Invention Rooms’ close to White City Station in London on February 14th in the morning starting at 10am. It will include lunch afterwards, which is free, and we will also provide refreshments and can pay for your transport costs for attending. The finish time is 13:30.

Will I get anything for taking part?

We will provide lunch and refreshments on the day and can pay for your transport costs for attending.

I am interested because I have been in receipt of the national FIT kit past few years and I have few issues with it but I have also few solutions.

Travelling from Newcastle to London for such an early start is totally impractical. Inviting volunteers from Newcastle is a nonsense. Travelling such a distance for 10am start should include an overnight stay! This is an interesting topic but really ludicrous for Newcastle volunteers!

I do understand your point of view Pat and thanks for your thoughts .

The VOICE website is opening up as a resource for users across a much wider area including London and not not only the Newcastle area so the study is not specifically targeted to Newcastle, which is why there may be some confusion.

If anyone from Newcastle would like to take part and it happens to be convenient on February 14th we would be very happy to welcome you.

    Best wishes

Good morning, Pat! We've had an exciting development with VOICE - we have very recently joined up with Imperial College who are going to be using the platform from now on to develop a VOICE@Imperial network. This means that you may start to see opportunities occurring in the London but unless it explicitly states that travel will be reimbursed for those living in other areas of the UK, then the usual 'reasonable travel expenses' will apply.

We will be sending all VOICE members a message this week to tell them about this exciting new collaboration with Imperial. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with us at voice@ncl.ac.uk or call 0191 208 1288. Best wishes, Alex.

Considering the time factor and expense, both would prohibit those who would otherwise be interested in attending.

Thanks for your thoughts about the study Maggie,

In this circumstance the simulation workshop is in London which may be difficult for people to attend I understand, however participation is for a half day morning on the 14th February only, and travel expenses will be paid for those attending.

If you would like any more information feel free to email me : theo.gd@imperial.ac.uk

    Many thanks

This kind of opportunity is not logical or cost effective for someone travelling from Newcastle.

A 10.00am start means leaving Newcastle about 4.30/5.00am and travelling across London during the rush hour.

A 4.00pm finish means travelling across London in the rush hour and leaving London at about 6.00/7.00pm.

I think you would also need an Oyster card.

Getting to Newcastle that early means a taxi ride & the return journey would be the same.

I estimate the cost, without snacks, as being about £180.

Why not have a session in Newcastle??

Thank you for your feedback Ian,

The study is being run from Imperial College in London and the team who help us with the simulation workshop session are also based in London which is the main reason for the location. We've picked West London as the patient involvement team at Imperial have held successful community events in this area.

The study is open to any members of the public inside and outside of London however, and this is why it is advertised on the VOICE website which people from many areas across England can access.

As you say it may be difficult for you to attend however if you are interested I'm very happy to answer any other questions you have through theo.gd@imperial.ac.uk email address.

The study will reinburse transport costs.

    Best wishes,

    Theo
